Even if the zinc layer is damaged locally, since the electrode potential of zinc is lower than that of iron, zinc will be corroded as an anode, while iron is protected as a cathode. This “sacrificial anode” protection can effectively prevent the steel pipe from rusting and greatly extend the service life of the steel pipe.
